Community Centre Bolungarvík
The Bolungarvík Community Center was inaugurated on April 14, 1952, and the building was the first community center to receive funding from the community center fund established by Althingi in 1947. Original designer 1947-1952: Halldór Halldórsson, architectural engineer.
Maintenance had long been lacking and requirements for facilities had changed over time, so it was necessary to undertake extensive reconstruction. The goal was also to improve accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
All of the building’s infrastructure has been renovated, as well as the exterior. Due to heavy snow loads and the distance of the main entrance from the street, access to the community center was often difficult. There was therefore a strong desire to seek every means to move the main entrance closer to the street and also improve the facilities for toilets and a coat rack. This was done with a simple extension. The main entrance is covered and well sheltered from strong northerly winds. At the old main entrance there is a dance floor bordered by a raised stage.
Inside, the emphasis was on warmth and joy. There is oak parquet on the floors, oak panels on the walls of the meeting room, and the interior and doors are made of oak. A reddish-yellow color is used for the stage curtains and curtains, and most of the chairs are red, but some are gray, and the table tops are gray-brown. The walls and ceiling are painted white, as are the windows. The exterior of the building is stoned with deep lagoon pearl and glitter stone. The outer corners, roof edges and frame of the old entrance are highlighted with whitewashed surfaces, the roof of the community center is galvanized, while the roof surface of the extension is paved.
