Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands – expansion of vocational facilities

From the report:
The school buildings of Fjölbrautskóli Suðurlands (FSU) are Oddi, Iða and Hamar, where vocational education is provided. With the addition of an extension at Hamar, vocational education facilities will be significantly improved, flexibility increased, innovation in teaching methods and strong development work will be offered.

The main goal is to provide a good environment in the form of housing and adjacent land. An environment that creates conditions for young people to receive a good education, which will be useful to them in their work, further education and social participation. Good classrooms that meet the requirements for usability and attractive living spaces in the common space between classrooms are prerequisites for successful school buildings.

The extension and the existing building are intertwined into a single whole. Vocational education rooms and academic classrooms are arranged along corridors and “squares” according to predetermined relationships. The arrangement includes flexibility in school work and strengthens the connections with other FSU buildings.

A new building is connected to the west side of Hamar. Together, these buildings form the FSU vocational school, which consists of two main wings. Woodwork and academic classrooms are located in the existing building, which forms the north wing of the vocational school. The south wing houses metalwork, hairdressing and academic classrooms, as well as teacher facilities. Electrical engineering, multimedia, photography and smithing, along with academic classrooms, connect these wings into a single whole. An outdoor area for woodwork is located between the two wings.
