Kindergarten in Seltjarnarnesi

From the report:

The building
An important aspect of the preschool’s work is outdoor play and learning. It is essential to ensure that all preschool students have good access to diverse playgrounds as well as convenient access for everyone to the preschool departments. To meet this, a proposal is made for a single-story preschool building that fits well with the environment and does not overshadow adjacent plots in addition to having an interesting roof shape. The north side of the building faces the street and serves as a formal facade. To the south, the boundaries of landscape and building are less clear, so that the visual experience of neighbors should be less impaired.

A large building is made more child-friendly and humane by dividing it into units and there are separate entrances to the preschool departments. The common spaces of the preschool are in the part of the building on the South Shore that connects all the wings. The main entrance connects to the common spaces and the service entrance is by the kitchen.

The proposal is based on a standardized design of preschool departments that can be adapted to different age levels. The preschool departments are arranged in four wings with the same basic arrangement with built-in flexibility for preschool work.

The playground
The preschool buildings are arranged in such a way that there are defined outdoor spaces that provide shelter and face the sun well during the preschool’s operating hours. The roof is partially accessible as a play and teaching area.
